Antibiotic Resistance is One of the Greatest Threats to Global Health
In the US, antibiotics are the most frequently prescribed medication to children. Choosing the most narrowly focused antibiotic is just as important as avoiding antibiotics for conditions in which they are not indicated. Understanding antibiotic resistance patterns relevant to your patient population is a key driver in choosing the most appropriate antibiotic. Previously, there was no statewide pediatric-specific antibiotic susceptibility data for the state of Georgia. Providing this data to pediatric providers will help improve prescribing practices. Georgia Pediatric Antibiotic Stewardship is the collaboration of the five children’s hospitals in Georgia to create a statewide antibiogram.
The four core elements of outpatient antibiotic stewardship are commitment, action for policy and practice, tracking and reporting, and education and expertise.

The antibiogram and antibiotic prescribing resources can be used together to help guide empiric antibiotic choice and recommended antibiotic durations for common bacterial infections in children.
